Nicola Kelly, our Health, Safety & Security Director, and graduate of the WiHTL Global Women Leaders Programme

What inspired you to join the WiHTL Global Women Leaders Programme, and what were your main takeaways?

"I have always placed a huge amount of value in seeking opportunities for personal development, particularly those where I can broaden my professional network and gain wider perspectives from others.

The programme was excellent in giving me all of this and much more, further embedding within me the need to be a curious, continual learner. The world and people around us are ever-changing—there is always so much more to learn and discover. This mindset enables me to be a better leader, one who can add even greater value to our people and our business."

How has the programme influenced your leadership style?

"The programme has reinforced the value of being my authentic self as a leader—because that is how you build trust and confidence with others.

It has also allowed me to reflect on how to be more deliberate and intentional with my actions and communications in a way that enhances my effectiveness while staying true to my personal style. Ultimately, the programme has grown my confidence, helping me to be a better and more impactful leader."

What challenges or barriers do you think female leaders still face in the workplace, and how can we help break them down?

"Imposter syndrome and personal confidence are challenges that affect most of us at one time or another. Recognising this and remembering that we are all human allows us to step outside our comfort zones, try new things, and take calculated risks.

Growth happens when we push ourselves, and this is where we can make real progress—not just for ourselves but for our teams and the business. When that imposter syndrome creeps in, remind yourself: ‘Of course me,’ not ‘Why me?’ because confidence is all about mindset and self-belief."

What advice would you give to someone considering the programme?

"Just do it! Prioritise making time to gain every ounce of opportunity from the programme—whether through structured sessions, personal reflection, peer discussions, or mentoring. The programme offers a safe space to work through personal and professional challenges, and the more you invest in it, the more you will gain. Make the most of this opportunity to lift yourself up—so that you can lift others up along the way."
